Kick, push, commute: How one Seattle IT rider rolled into the spotlight 

Every so often, a story comes along that keeps us on a roll. This August, that story belonged to Ram Biyani, a Seattle IT staff member whose commute is anything but ordinary. As part of the City of Seattle’s MyTrips program, which spent the month spotlighting scooter commuting, we followed Ram’s wheely impressive journey from Whidbey Island all the way to the Seattle Municipal Tower. 

Spoiler: it involves a ferry, a train, and a whole lot of pushing off. 

The route less traveled 

Most commutes fit neatly into one mode of transportation, maybe two. Ram’s does not. His daily trek stitches together a scooter, a ferry ride across Puget Sound, and a leg on the Sounder train before he rolls into the office. It is a multi-modal masterpiece, and honestly, the kind of dedication that makes the rest of us feel a little slow off the line. 

Ram made it look easy. We know it is not. Coordinating ferry schedules, train times, and scooter legs takes planning, patience, and a good sense of humor when the timing does not quite line up. 

Going green, one push at a time 

Here is where Ram’s commute really shines. By swapping a car for a scooter, a ferry, and a train, he shrinks his carbon footprint in a big way. Fewer emissions, less congestion, and a smaller impact on the region we all care about. 

For a workforce that takes sustainability seriously, Ram’s routine is a rolling reminder that greener choices are within reach. You do not need to reinvent your entire life. Sometimes you just need a scooter and a plan. 

Lights, camera, time-Lapse 

To give everyone a front-row seat, Ram created a dizzying time-lapse video of the first stretch of his commute. Watching this part of his journey compress into a few fast-moving minutes through Langley was genuinely mesmerizing. He also tracked the journey through one of our mapping tools, Esri, to show an impressive squiggly line of the whole journey including still pictures along the way.  

It is one thing to hear about a multi-modal commute. It is another to watch it unfold, wheels and all. 

A department comuting with him 

What made this campaign truly special was that it did not just feature Ram. Our department rode along on the journey.  

Throughout August, Seattle IT employees jumped in with both feet. Across a month of newsletter stories, trivia, and quizzes, staff members weighed in, chased prizes, and cheered Ram along his route. Here is a taste of how the community rolled with it: 

Scooter trivia that tested just how much we really know about two-wheeled travel. 

Route voting, where employees helped decide the best path for Ram’s journey. 

Biggest obstacle polls, letting colleagues guess what slowed him down most. 

Safety practice votes, ranking which habits matter most on the road. 

Music choices, because no great commute is complete without the right soundtrack. 

Prizes were on the line, votes poured in, and the whole thing turned into a friendly, energizing month of participation. It was less of a solo ride and more of a group cruise. 

At Seattle IT, we spend a lot of our days focused on secure systems, reliable tools, and keeping the City running smoothly. But we are also a community of people with stories worth telling. Campaigns like this one give us a chance to celebrate each other, connect across teams, and have a little fun while we are at it. 

Ram’s commute reminded us that public service and personal passion often travel the same road. His green, creative, three-part journey struck a chord because it reflected the values so many of us share: care for our environment, pride in our region, and a willingness to do things a little differently. 

The scoot rides on 

The MyTrips scooter feature has wrapped, but the spirit behind it keeps rolling. We loved watching colleagues rally around one of their own, and we cannot wait to shine a light on the next employee doing something remarkable.
